Equality is at the core of workplace rights, movements and democracy. But what does it really mean? Equality suggests the equal treatment, and respect, of people across different groups. Our aspiration for equality is built into the foundations of our legal and democratic systems and has found expression in different ways, such as the Equality Act and the right of each citizen to a vote. This aspiration has driven the most important constitutional moments in recent history. In the workspace, where technology is driving a multi-dimensional transformation and stakes are high, the drive to promote meaningful equality is sharpening.
This discussion paper identifies key positive and negative implications of technology on equality in the workspace, and offers a new framework for thinking about impacts on different aspects of work.
