Spotlight April 2025 | A mid-month bulletin

It has been a period of major economic turbulence and – as labour markets evolve and workplaces look to adopt new technologies – how we build skills for a resilient workforce is becoming even more important.

Informed by research from our Nuffield Foundation-funded Pissarides Review on the changing landscape of skills, the APPG on the Future of Work – for which IFOW acts as a secretariat and Strategic Research Partner – is convening an expert discussion on 'Skills for a Thriving Economy' on Thursday 24 April.

Bringing together parliamentarians, industry leaders, and skills experts, this event will explore how we can ensure that workers and businesses are equipped with the skills they need to thrive as the UK economy experiences technological transformation, and how human experiences can be kept at the centre of this transition.

Confirmed:

  • Lord Jim Knight – APPG Co-Chair
  • Lauren Edwards – MP for Rochester and Strood
  • Donna Ford-Clarke – VP of Vocational Qualifications and Portfolio at Pearson
  • Simon Parkinson – Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Workers Educational Association
  • Dan Howl – Head of Policy and Public Affairs at BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT
  • Lizzie Crowley – Senior Skills Policy Advisor at the CIPD
