How organisations can take a people-centred approach to AI

IFOW has been working in partnership with the CIPD supporting organisations in understanding how to take a people-centred approach to integrate AI-enabled solutions effectively and responsibly at work.

Using funding from the government's BridgeAI programme - which looks to empower organisations to responsibly harness the power of AI - IFOW conducted action-research in firms to surface how understanding the human impact and organisational dynamics is essential for responsible innovation.

Led by our Co-Founder and Director, Anna Thomas MBE, work from this major project will be published over the next weeks and includes 8 case studies in the public and private sector. The first 'insight report' has just been released, highlighting how a systematic, people-centred approach could work in practice.*

Further work from the project - alongside policy briefings and stakeholder events - will be coming over the next month or so.

Informed by work across the case studies conducted with firms, central to the approach that IFOW has taken is that a 'work design lens' is absolutely crucial. This means examining how environmental factors surrounding AI adoption changes tasks, responsibilities, discretion, skills and accountability - and doing so together.

If you would like to discuss how we can work with firms on practical implementation of this framework for people-centred AI adoption, please do get in touch.

Places are filling up quickly for our major conference on 18th May!

Make sure that you register for our Making the Future Work conference on 18th May, as places are filling up very quickly. Featuring a keynote address from Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, and an array of fantastic speakers, this is set to be a key moment in the drive to direct the power of AI towards good work.

Find out more and reserve a place here.

The conference is timely. Just this week, the Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered the Mais lecture, where she set out priorities for growth in the midst of global turbulence and technological transformation. A key part of this was about regional investment - which IFOW has been highlighting in our Pissarides Review. Another was on getting an AI-powered economy right, where she promised 'an active and strategic state protects British interests through AI sovereignty, with absolute clarity about where growth will come from and who will benefit, harnessing and shaping new technology in our common interest.'

It is towards AI governance and innovation that delivers a fairer, flourishing society that we are working at IFOW, across all of our projects - and hope you'll join us at this conference to add to the discussions on how we can all help steer towards that better future of work.

Working with the AI Security Institute on Productivity

We recently completed some work in partnership with the AI Security Institute, as they sought to explore "To what extent does AI deliver productivity gains for individuals performing work-related tasks?”

They have kindly allowed us to cross-post their blog piece on this work, which can be found on our site here.

Pissarides Review at the RAI Awards

It was wonderful to be at the RAI awards ceremony last night, where the Pissarides Review - funded by the Nuffield Foundation - was shortlisted for 'Best Research Project for Impact'.

We didn't get the gong this time, but had a fantastic evening celebrating the brilliant work that so many organisations are doing, very ably MC'd by IFOW board member, Professor Gina Neff. Congrats to all the winners and finalists!
